Oh wow. This is a point I haven’t thought of. Yes, there has been plenty of overt ableism (ie. functioning labels, aspie supremacy), but
I hadn’t considered how emphasizing our intellect and strengths can unintentionally demean or invalidate folks with intellectual disabilities and others with high support needs, as though their voices don’t matter. They do.
They matter and by alienating their parents we’re leaving an entire group of Autistics out of our advocacy and community.
