I ended up shelling out for bluetooth GPS trackers for my keys and wallet. I use Tile -- they used to be $35 for a pack of two and the app is a free download, but I think the price has gone up quite a bit since then.

Also, there's a Find My Phone app for iPhones. You can download it onto any other compatible device and use it to ping your phone.
